MUJI开农场,到底卖什么?

2月17日,MUJI无印良品在中国开出首家“农场概念店”,门店位于上海前滩太古里。

寸土寸金的豪华选址与“MUJI农场”主题一时间形成强烈的视觉与认知冲击,而一向以“性冷淡”风格著称的无印良品,开始销售“自种”蔬菜的动作也足够吸睛。

事实上,无印良品在中国(上海)已经卖了两年菜了。早在2021年11月,它便与京东合作开出了中国首家生鲜复合店,只不过生鲜、蔬果、熟食以及部分自研商品均由京东七鲜来主导。

从产品供应链角度来看,无印良品2021年涉足生鲜超市领域的中国首秀,并不那么完美,只能称之为中国版MUJI marché(菜市场)。

但今年新开的“MUJI农场”,销售的蔬菜均由设在上海市内的农场“MUJI FARM”按照无印良品指定的品种和栽培方法种植而成。

换句话说,这家新店强调产地直送,产品可溯源,与日本版MUJI marché更接近。

日式杂货店“跨界”卖自种蔬菜,并非易事但却看点十足。细数起来,这也是MUJI继尝试书店、餐厅、酒店、装修、便利店、生鲜超市等多个业态后的又一创新之举。

然而,在不缺菜市场、生鲜超市、社区生鲜小店,更不缺生鲜电商的中国零售市场,“持续性”是消费者对无印良品做生鲜的灵魂拷问,否则它将再次成为收割中产阶级、以“农场包围城市”玩法引导其一步步走向消费主义陷阱的品牌策略。

1 良品“卖菜”,出奇却难制胜

无印良品“卖菜”的举动最早开始于2017年,相继于日本东京、大阪繁华地段开设了两家菜市场,而2018年无印良品开出了号称“全球面积最大的MUJI菜市场”,占地面积达到4300平方米,主打高端食材的销售。

值得注意的是,无印良品在日本和中国市场却采用了两套品牌策略。

结合无印良品在中国开设的两家菜市场来看,其特点主要包括:

第一,门店地段繁华,产品售价不低,主要贵在品牌溢价。

在门店选址上,无印良品选择了寸土寸金的黄金地段。奢侈品选址,遵循“贵的才是对的”原则。而与奢侈品毗邻的无印良品,自然而然将自身定义为“奢侈品”。

位于上海前滩太古里的无印良品“农场概念店”,身价自然不低。

要知道,继北京三里屯太古里和成都远洋太古里后,上海前滩太古里作为众多环球时尚生活品牌、奢侈品品牌的落户点,是有望成为第二个“陆家嘴”的地标性项目。

虽然无印良品“自降身段”开起了生鲜店、也卖起了自种蔬菜,被冠以“有机”之名的青菜、叶甜菜、蒜苗、鸡毛菜、苤蓝分别售价9-24元不等,但与市场上同类型蔬菜相比,无印良品的产品售价并不低。

在日本,无印良品是平价品牌的代表,因此它能推出“1000日元(52元人民币)任选蔬菜”的概念作招徕,以优惠价格获得消费者好评。

而在中国,无印良品显然将自己打造成了高端生活方式的象征。

因此,产品主要贵在了品牌溢价。随着中产阶层对品牌逐渐祛魅,无印良品也不得不将原本的“中产”目标群体拓宽至老年人。

其次,“产品好用”和“设计精良”一直是无印良品最鲜明的用户心智,也是“价格贵”的底气所在。

在业绩走向不明之时试水生鲜领域,一旦在产品质量上翻车,铁粉都很难给它洗白。

第二,门店设计延续“极简风”,但模式与盒马鲜生、永辉七鲜等生鲜超市类似,“日杂+生鲜”所产生的化学反应不显著。

无印良品菜场除了售卖鲜鱼、生肉、蔬果等生鲜农副产品外,也提供了现场加工和用餐服务。

消费者还能亲身参与料理制作,以及购买无印服饰、杂货等常规产品。此外,无印良品在卖菜这件事儿上还主打线上线下、全渠道、全场景一体化运营。

只不过,无印良品想在生鲜赛道上分一杯羹难度较大。

在品牌认知方面,消费者更多将其定义为日式杂货店,卖菜做生鲜无非是希望将品牌升级为涵盖衣食住行全方面的生活提案场所,让消费者重新认识和理解无印良品。

其次,中国生鲜市场线上及线下均已经有不同头部互联网平台先入局,探索的新玩法也越来越多。

「零售商业财经」认为,生鲜零售缺少巨头的一个重要原因,是因为生鲜零售不是一门好做的生意。这源于生鲜产业在产品、流通、生产环节的特殊性。在损耗问题方面,果蔬普遍常温保质期在一周左右,肉禽、水产更不用提,很多只能现杀现销,或者直接活体出售。

而对于无印良品而言,以“概念店”的形式发力菜市场,是为了挽回国内持续低迷的业绩,还是将其继续作为主业的点缀尚不得而知,但巨头环伺、竞争胶着的生鲜业态绝对不是一条好走的路。

2 频频跨界背后的业绩焦虑

在很长一段时间的中国社会语境中,“农场”一词鲜少与“高端”有所联系,甚至还引发过“高端农业是否是伪命题”的社会探讨。

近年来,一些极具高端调性的国际品牌开始频繁跨界生鲜业态,让生鲜这门生意开始变得精致、甚至是奢侈。

除无印良品外,Prada也曾在上海市中心开出快闪菜市场,诚品书店更是将“慢生活美学”延伸至生鲜市集,推出诚品知味市集the eslite Marché……

令人好奇的是,为何这么多的消费品牌开始频繁跨界,盯上了极具烟火气与市井气的菜市场?

俯身“卖菜”会是今后品牌开设线下门店的跨界首选吗?而作为生活方式的品牌代表,无印良品频频探索新业态,究竟意欲何为?

面对日益激烈的市场竞争环境,高端消费在2022年的溃败令不少人始料未及。进一步讲,在高端消费方面真正溃败的,并不是那些身处财富金字塔顶端者,而是那些平时迷恋于越级消费的中产阶层。

而曾经与中产阶层划等号的无印良品,因其“简约即奢侈”的设计理念和品牌价值让这一群体趋之若鹜。

2016年以来,无印良品在中国内地市场的表现每况愈下,除了屡次被爆出产品质量问题,业绩增长也渐趋减慢,同店销售下滑严重。2017年出现负增长,2018财年Q3至2019财年Q4的6个季度内,无印良品在华营收降幅明显、增长乏力。2020年,无印良品美国子公司受疫情影响而申请破产保护。

根据无印良品母公司良品计划发布的2022年财报,该公司营收同比增长9.4%,但经营溢利和归母净利润分别同比下滑22.8%和27.6%。

面对“增收不增利”的困局,无印良品将业绩不佳的原因归咎于,服饰品类销售低迷、日元贬值和运输费用上涨等综合因素。

叠加三年疫情的影响,消费主义的狂热逐渐冷却,更是让无印良品的优势变劣势,败于优衣库等更具性价比的日本品牌。

正因如此,顶着业绩压力的无印良品,在中国不再只盯着中产了,不断通过降价促销、复合式场景营销来自救,多少有点儿自降身价“讨生活”的意味。

无印良品尝试在生鲜业态上碰碰运气,从卖菜到卖自种菜,看似“不务正业”的表现,目的是带给消费者反差的新鲜感,用小钱博大流量,拓宽消费群体,赚取一个短期的破圈层流量。

3 良品“下凡”,从一心高冷到专心搞钱

创立于1983年的MUJI无印良品,一直通过售卖家居杂货和体验式服务来“教你怎么生活”。

自2005年进入中国市场后,无印良品始终以休闲零食、服装等日常用品为主导,不过在教育一二线城市的消费者如何系统性地学习花钱、保持精致这条路上,无印良品可谓功不可没。

无印良品二代设计总监原研哉,在继承“性冷淡”的设计风格之外,还总结出了三大设计理念:空、自然而然、家。

彼时以“反对消费主义、反对过度包装、反品牌著称”的无印良品不仅满足了中国的消费欲望,更填补了国内中产阶级的审美空白,给中国零售行业带来了一次关于“品质”升级的全新思考

如今无印良品的野心,早已从服装和日用品燃烧至衣食住行全部承包的状态,开拓新业务也似乎成了它在中国市场频繁使用的策略。

无论是贩卖“生活美学”的MUJI BOOKS书店;还是开在黄金地段的MUJI HOTEL酒店;以及售卖快餐轻食的 MUJI Diner;或是提供设计的家装服务品牌MUJI INFILL;又或是设在办公楼里卖便当的MUJIcom便利店……

肉眼可见的是,无印良品所涉足的业务范畴一直在持续扩大,进军咖啡店、户外用品零售、住房等体验式消费领域,尤其是食品领域。虽然开拓的新业务品类繁多,但每一种却仅有一两家。

并且在一次次的新业态尝试中,无印良品的慌乱感与危机感一览无遗,最直观的体现就是消费者不吃这一套了。

就拿2021年与京东合作的那家生鲜复合店来说,从早期消费者的反馈来看,不少用户认为这一国内首家无印良品生鲜复合店跟常规的生鲜超市差别不大,很像“无印良品店里面套了一家七鲜超市”。

至于近期开业的“农场概念店”,在社交平台上打卡拍照的人群依然偏多,而真正将其作为生活方式的究竟有多少还得打个问号。

奢侈品牌的跨界常被网友戏称为“下凡”,但奢侈品牌不是真的放下高贵的身姿,打破高冷的印象,接地气的产品并不等失去品牌调性。

而无印良品的“下凡”,却是实打实地从一心高冷转变成专心搞钱。

聚焦生鲜业态的探索,无印良品尚未形成标准化与规模化,这也意味着它很难给中国消费者带来物美价廉的生鲜蔬菜。

生鲜商品的本身属性,决定了售卖的形态及方式。
